International Women’s Day is on 8 March and this year celebrations will be held at seven communities across the Central Highlands, instead of only in Emerald.
The theme for 2018 is #PressforProgress. Global activism for women’s equality has been fuelled by movements like the #metoo campaign and there is a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.
Central Highlands Regional Council General Manager Communities Daniel Fletcher said expanding the event was a step forward in connecting women from communities across the region.
‘We have many women who are pro-active and engaged members in their communities and many of those are involved in traditionally male dominated environments like agriculture and mining,’ he said.
‘International Women’s Day has long marked a signature event here in Emerald, but it was time that we spread the event across the region to reach out to women in our smaller towns.
‘Each of the events include a morning tea, guest speakers and the opportunity to network with and be inspired by women in the local community.’
Almost 14 000 women represent the Central Highlands that is just under fifty per cent of the total population. Show your support for International Women’s Day and the women in your community by attending one of the local events.
