The Springsure Aerodrome and Emerald Airport have undergone upgrades to enhance safety and maintain usability for residents and visitors.
At the Springsure Aerodrome, the runway has been fully resealed to protect against wear and deterioration. This upgrade ensures the runway remains safe and operational, preventing further damage that could have rendered the aerodrome unusable for small aircrafts. Final line markings are set to be added soon.
‘Our investment in the Springsure Aerodrome runway not only protects a valuable community asset but also supports essential transport and tourism for the area,’ said Cr Robert Donaldson, Chair of council’s Airport Advisory Committee.
‘It’s a proactive step that will help maintain the aerodrome’s usability well into the future.’
At Emerald Airport, work is underway on a comprehensive drainage improvement project on the runways. This 3-month project will address natural soil movement caused by moisture retention, which has led to uneven surfaces on the sides of runway.
Council plans to complete the project by early next year, weather permitting. This work will help ensure Emerald Airport remains compliant with regulatory standards while improving safety for all users of the airport. This project received grant funding from the Australian Government.
‘The works at Emerald Airport reflect our commitment to improving essential infrastructure that benefits both residents and visitors to our region,’ Cr Donaldson said.
‘The grant has allowed us to make these critical improvements without bearing the full financial burden, which is a huge win for our community.’
The Springsure Aerodrome and Emerald Airport projects are part of council’s broader strategy to maintain infrastructure across the region. These upgrades ensure that transport facilities in the Central Highlands remain reliable, resilient, and ready to support the needs of the community.
