Central Highlands Regional Council endorsed the Central Highlands Water Security Strategy and Action Plan at last month’s council meeting.
Mayor Kerry Hayes commended the team for preparing the strategy and expressed his support for the initiative.
‘For council, providing reliable, efficient and safe water and wastewater services to residents and businesses is one of our core responsibilities.
‘Our water supplies rely on rainfall with our water source storages monitored daily by council’s water utilities team and managed carefully to ensure there is enough water during periods of drought,’ he said.
The strategy focuses on managing water sources best and securing additional water for the region whilst evaluating the options available for future water supplies and when they may be required.
It outlines security measures during drought and how we can conserve water year-round.
‘During the twenty-year period, the action plan will be revised every three years to assess project budget and capacity,’ he continued.
‘The $4 million upgrade to Capella to Tieri pipeline is just one example of the budget committed to this strategy.
‘Additional water allocation has also been secured for Comet,’ Mayor Hayes said.
