Emerald Airport recently played host to Scouts Queensland for a weekend filled with aviation excitement.
Over 100 young Scouts from across Queensland gathered for the event, which offered a unique blend of hands-on experiences aimed at fostering an interest in aviation.
The event, organized by Scouts Queensland Air Activities, featured an array of activities including cost-shared flights, flight simulators, glider and model-building, hangar tours, drone demonstrations, and more.
Scouts had the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of aviation, learning about everything from aircraft mechanics to piloting, while also participating in fun, educational activities.
Council proudly supported the initiative by waiving landing fees at the airport and providing support to make the event possible.
Mayor Janice Moriarty commented on Council’s role in supporting the event:
‘Council is proud to provide in-kind support by waiving landing fees at Emerald Airport.
‘It’s our way of helping foster opportunities for our youth and making sure events like this can continue to thrive in our community,
‘Aviation is such an exciting and dynamic field; these unique opportunities spark an interest that could turn into a future career for many of these young people.’ She said.
The aviation weekend was designed to align with these goals, offering Scouts an opportunity to gain valuable skills and experiences in a field that inspires curiosity and exploration.
Emerald Airport was first approached about the event in April 2024, when Scouts Queensland sought a location to bring youth members from Far North Queensland for a unique aviation experience.
Adam Strong, Air Activities, Branch Advisor from Scouts Queensland expressed their appreciation for Council’s support,
‘We are grateful for the support from Emerald Airport by letting use the hangar space for the day. Having a secured facility where we can spread out our activities is of huge benefit when we are welcoming over 160 Scouts and Leaders to the event.’
‘We’d also like to thank Council for waiving the landing fees, this helps to reduce the overall cost to the youth that have travelled far and wide to be here.’
‘We hire our aircraft from Flight One Aviation Academy, Archerfield Brisbane. We really value flight schools that are willing to work with us to provide aircraft, equipment and facilities for our events.’ he added.
