Rockhampton artist Elena Churilova is renowned for her ability to capture the extraordinary within the ordinary, everyday world around us, in an array of mediums – watercolour, pastels and oils.
Ms Churilova’s recent works, collected in her exhibition Overture, are on display at the Emerald Art Gallery until 9 March 2019, with the official opening night to be conducted Friday 22 February 2019 from 6.00 to 9.00 pm.
‘My works are self-reflective – I love music and earlier in life played piano, although this is something I do not do enough now,’ Ms Churilova said.
‘In wanting this exhibition to have a musical element to it, I chose Overture as the title of the show.’
She said the exhibition served as an introduction to her work and reflected a deeply rooted tradition of Russian School of Art infused with her own style and love of colours that reflect the brightness of the Australian landscape.
‘The musical titles reflect my feelings at the time of preparation of the work,’ she said.
‘You, the viewer may be inspired to think of a completely different, musical piece as you encounter the works in your home town.’
Mayor Kerry Hayes said the exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the Emerald Art Gallery.
‘We’re proud to host Central Queensland local artist Elena Churilova’s solo exhibition after her taking out the Central Highlands Regional Council Acquisitive Award at last year’s annual art awards,’ Mayor Hayes said.
‘I encourage people to drop in and view the thirty works on display.
‘Each and every one boasts a strong Central Queensland flavour with scenic images of the Capricorn Coast and inland.
‘The official opening evening will be a great opportunity to network with art enthusiasts and experience what Central Queensland art has to offer.’
Ms Churilova also won a major prize at the Brigalow Arts Festival in Biloela, and the ‘Best Overall Painting’ title at the 42nd Annual Art Competition and Exhibition in Blackwater.
All are welcome to share the opening evening and indulge in art, wine and cheese with local art enthusiasts.
