The first package of the Queensland Government’s Natural Disaster Resilience program has been completed in the Central Highlands, with six out of twenty-four concrete floodways now installed at low-lying areas throughout the region’s unsealed road network.
The $1.5 million project is jointly funded by the Central Highlands Regional Council, with crews constructing floodways at drainage points on Wyuna, Morrisseys and Withersfield Roads so far.
The works involve removing the existing pavement and replacing with a 30 m x 8 m concrete floodway, inclusive of cut off walls, and stabilising the approaches.
All sites have been identified through digital mapping of previous flood damage events.
This project aims to improve the safety of council’s road network, enabling overland run-off water to cross the road and reducing disruptions to rural residents in wet weather events.
