Central Highlands Regional Council will carry out a hazard reduction burn along the eastern side of the Gregory Highway from Pritchard Road, Emerald, northwards to the truck set down area out of town.
The burn is planned to commence mid-morning on Saturday 14 July 2018. However, it’s weather dependent and may be postponed if conditions are unsuitable.
Mayor Kerry Hayes said the area is considered high risk by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services for the upcoming summer fire season.
‘The burn-off is a measure to reduce the potential bushfire hazard,’ he said.
‘People living in the area should expect smoke and ash in the area, however every attempt will be made to keep disturbances to a minimum.
‘Council’s emergency management staff works with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services urban and rural brigades, the State Emergency Service, SunWater and the Department of Main Roads to carry out the burn and reduce the risk of bushfires in the area.
‘However, being prepared is the key to bushfire safety and people should have their properties prepared and a Bushfire Survival Plan in place.’
Further hazard reduction burns are planned, and information will be made available as dates, times and locations are set.
