Machinery has moved in at the Emerald Botanic Gardens and the crew has begun clearing debris from the Nogoa River as part of the Nogoa River Revitalisation Project.
Works were scheduled to begin in February but were delayed due to weather conditions and related emergency works at the time.
Manager Infrastructure Jason Hoolihan said people can expect some disruption on the eastern side of the Emerald Botanic Gardens while work is underway over the coming weeks.
‘The project involves removing fallen trees and debris from the river,’ he said.
‘We are using an excavator to hook onto the branches and trees, remove them to the bank and then chop them up and take them away.’
The project is unique and poses challenges to crews and machinery. Two workers are required to be in the water to attach a sling to the branches and logs.
Once completed, the works will open up the river for recreational activities like kayaking and boating.
Council asks people to stay well away from the worksite and outside of exclusion zones. The work can be viewed from the opposite side of the river.
