Central Highlands Regional Council sold five properties by auction yesterday to recover unpaid rates.
Only six properties were listed for sale from the original list of 16. On the day, five were sold and one property, located at Duaringa, was not sold and will pass into council ownership.
Thirty people attended the sale and 14 bidder cards were issued.
Mayor Kerry Hayes said the auction was the end of a long process.
‘There is a comprehensive process to work through for the recovery of unpaid rates and charges and every opportunity is explored with landholders, financiers and others well before we get to the sale.
‘We started the recovery in late 2016 and only six properties were auctioned because the others settled before the sale.
‘Our first priority is to work with property owners with rate arrears to negotiate payment arrangements, but sometimes this is not successful.
‘This was the first round of sales and notices of intention to sell for round two have been sent,’ he said.
Anyone wanting to discuss a payment arrangement for their rates should contact council on 1300 242 686 or email email@example.com.
