Rangers from the Central Highlands Regional Council have been given official authorisation to enter properties and check for dog registrations, livestock permits and secure enclosures.
The council approved a systematic inspection program last month, aimed at improving the compliance of animal owners within the region.
The three-month program, under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the Local Government Act 2009, enables council’s rangers to enter properties unannounced to check enclosures, permits and registrations.
The program will commence on 1 September 2016 and run through until 1 December 2016, targeting as many residential and commercial premises as possible within the designated urban area.
Inspections will be conducted between 6.00 am and 7.00 pm Monday to Friday.
