Work has this week commenced on chlorination upgrades to the Park Avenue Sewage Treatment Plant in Emerald.
The $3 million council project, awarded to Queensland infrastructure business Pensar, will involve the construction of a new chlorine contact tank and storage facilities at the existing plant.
Works will also include an upgrade to high technology remote access software as well as earthworks and roadworks.
With over 75% of the workforce being sourced locally, Pensar Managing Director Karl Yunker said the project will provide an injection of investment in Emerald.
“As a Queensland-owned and based company we are committed to supporting Queensland regional contractors and employment,” he said.
The upgrade also alleviates pressure on Fairbairn Dam drinking water levels by ensuring continued supply of high quality non-potable water to local irrigators, particularly during times of drought.
Central Highlands Mayor Cr Kerry Hayes said the upgrades reflected council’s commitment to reliable and sustainable water infrastructure.
“This project will increase the efficiency of the treatment plant, but also enable our water services to keep up with future residential and industry growth,” he said.
The project will be completed in approximately 5 months.
