Over the next few months, Springsure landfill will be transformed into a transfer station as part of the Central Highlands Regional Council Waste Reduction & Recycling Plan.
According to a council spokesperson, the plan was developed in collaboration with the community to provide guidance and direction to reduce waste to landfill over the next ten years. The transition, which begins in May, is expected to be completed by the end of August this year and the site will remain open to the public with minimal disruptions.
There will be no charge to visit the transfer station and dispose of waste, however it will need to be separated into the appropriate bins, such as green waste, rubbish, and cardboard. This will assist Council with our environmental obligations, as any separated materials such as scrap metal, cardboard, glass and batteries can be recycled.
Commercial waste arrangements will remain the same. Business owners can hire private collectors or take their waste to Lochlees Landfill and pay the appropriate fees.
