Capella’s Linear Park came under siege on Thursday, 31 March, as vandals racked up over $5000 in damages. Shell-shocked members of Central Highland Regional Council’s parks and gardens crew reported the damage to police early on Friday morning.
18 LED pathway lights, eight bottle trees and three peanut trees were damaged in the attack and will cost an estimated $5000 to replace.
Council CEO Scott Mason said he’s ‘disappointed’ that some people have so little regard for public property.
‘It is very sad that people would go out of their way to cause such damage to a local park. Our team work hard to keep the parks looking great for visitors to enjoy and this has left them heartbroken’.
The park, located alongside the Gregory Highway in the centre of town, is a popular spot for both residents and tourists. It also houses a tribute to the Australian Light Horse Brigade.
‘We encourage anyone with information on the incident to contact police.’
