Central Highlands Regional Council respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands across the Central Highlands.

We value cultural diversity in our region, and view Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage as integral in a shared national identity. We have a strong commitment to building inclusive and vibrant communities.

Council is committed to provide services and opportunities that are respectful and accessible to all members of the community.

As our reconciliation journey evolves new information will be added.

  • Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan

    Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan 2020-2021

    Our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan aims to ensure that Central Highlanders are respectful of the tradition and culture of its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, which make up 6.4% of the population. It is a plan for the past, the present and the future.

    As a vibrant community that is welcoming of all people, this plan shows that a strong commitment to the Indigenous history of this region makes it inherently a better community to build a future.

    The plan is officially endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

  • Native title and cultural heritage

    Native title is the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights and interests to land and waters according to their traditional law and customs as set out in Australian Law. Native Title is governed by the Native Title Act 1993 (Commonwealth).

    According to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act of 2003, Aboriginal cultural heritage is anything that is:

    • a significant Aboriginal area in Queensland; or
    • a significant Aboriginal object; or
    • evidence, of archaeological or historic significance, of Aboriginal occupation of an area of Queensland.
