Frequently Asked Questions

  • How to register a dog

You can register your dog, or change your dog registration details at any of the council offices or online.

To register your dog in person, print out and complete the application form and call into your local council office.

To register your dog online, complete the online form and a council customer service officer will contact you to process the payment.

You will need to bring your pet’s microchip certificate or proof of payment, proof of desexing (if this applies to your animal) and any concession card should you be seeking a pensioner rate.

If your dog is not implanted with its prescribed permanent identification device (PPID) (microchip) at time of registration, you will need to have this done within 14 days of registration to comply with the relevant sections of the Animal Management Act 2008 or you may be subject to on the spot fines, maximum penalty 20 penalty units.

If you change address, contact details or sell or give away your pet, you must notify council.

If your dog is not registered fines may apply.

You can lodge further requests in relation to animal management, such as a wandering dog or stock route enquiry,  via council’s online services portal.

  • When to register a dog

In Queensland, all dogs must be registered with council:

    • before they are 12 weeks old
    • within 14 days of moving to a new local council area or taking over ownership

Working dogs are an exception to this requirement in the Central Highlands. However, a working dog declaration form should be completed. Hunting dogs are not classified as working dogs and therefore need to be registered as a domestic pet.

Registration can be done at any time of the year. Renewals due at the start of each financial year.

  • What is microchipping?

A microchip contains a unique 15 digit identification number and is quickly implanted under your pet’s skin between the shoulders.

If your animal is found and the microchip is scanned, your pet can be identified.

Microchips may be implanted only by a vet or other authorised person.

All dogs and cats born after 10 April 2009 must be microchipped before they are sold or given away. All regulated dogs must be microchipped regardless of when they were born.

If your dog or cat is not microchipped fines may apply.

  • Owning more than one dog and multiple animal permits

In urban areas, you can have up to two dogs. A permit may be granted for up to three dogs.

If you would like to apply to keep additional animals, please fill out the relevant form below and submit it at your local council office.

    Description Cost
Multiple animal/ multiple dwelling permit application $97.00
Annual permit for multiple animal/dwelling $54.00
  • Registering a desexed dog

If you are registering a desexed dog then evidence must be produced that the dog has been desexed. This should either be a desexing certificate or a veterinary invoice stating that the dog has been desexed. Alternatively, owners can provide a statutory declaration stating the dog is desexed.

    • If a registration application is not completed in full with the dog’s microchip number and/ or evidence to support desexing, the entire animal fee applies.
    • Regulated dogs are not eligible for discounts for being desexed or microchipped.
    • Owners of restricted dogs (banned breeds) are not eligible for discounts associated with de-sexing or microchipping.  An application for a permit must be completed, submitted and paid for in full to process in addition to the full cost of registration.
