What should I not put in my recycling bin?
REDcycle for soft plastics
Soft plastics that can be scrunched like bread bags, chocolate/biscuit wrappers, plastic bags, cat/dog food pouches, bubble wrap, and cling wrap can be disposed to your nearest REDcycle collection bin available near the checkout at Coles/ Woolworths.
These bins are managed by Redcycle Pty Ltd. They are converted to recycled products like indoor and outdoor furniture, bollards, and signage in partnership with Replas.
Close the Loop recycle these plastics into asphalt additive for road infrastructures. Plastic Forests use REDcycle products to make mini wheel stops and air conditioner mounting blocks.

TechCollect for e-waste
Unwanted electronic goods like old computers, printers, scanners, faxes, TVs, tabloids, and laptops can be dropped to Emerald Resource Recovery Centres (for domestic e-waste only).
These are then picked up by TechCollect to recycle into new electronic products.
Retail and business organisation can partner with TechCollect for free collection, transport and recycling of unwanted e-waste.

MobileMuster for mobile phones
Old damaged mobile phones including batteries, chargers and other accessories can be dropped to the Emerald Resource Recovery Centre and other council offices.
Central Highlands Regional Council has joined MobileMuster program for free collection, and recycling services.
You can also recycle your old mobile from home. For this, you just need to fill the MobileMuster form from MobileMuster website.
Once approved, they will send you a MobileMuster mailing labels for you to post back your old mobile phones and accessories for free.

ChemClear for AgVet chemicals
Central Highlands Regional Council has registered with ChemClear for collection of AgVet chemicals. Council is notified for the collection in advance.
Chemicals classified under Group 1 are collected free of charge while fee applies for chemicals classified under Group 2.
You need to register your chemical with ChemClear for pick up. For registering your chemical, you can call 1800 008 182, complete ChemClear inventory form online or mail to ChemClear at GPO Box 816 Canberra City.

drumMUSTER for AgVet chemical containers
Central Highlands Regional Council has registered with drumMUSTER for free collection of eligible empty agricultural and veterinary chemical containers.
Eligible containers with the drumMUSTER logo are the ones which are emptied, rinsed and dried properly.
Collection points for these containers are Lochlees, Springsure, Rolleston, Capella, and Duaringa Resource Recovery Centres.

Batteries
Domestic lead acid batteries (car batteries) can be dropped at Emerald, Capella, Springsure, Tieri, Blackwater, and Rubyvale Resource Recovery Centres.
Oil
Domestic oil and oil filters can be collected at Bluff, Capella, Duaringa, Emerald, Rolleston, Sapphire/Rubyvale, Springsure, Tieri and Blackwater Resource Recovery Centres.
It must be stored in a clean leakproof container like a milk bottle or oil bottle and tightened with a cap.
For commercial oil collection service, JJ Richards accepts oil, filters, coolants and other hydrocarbon waste.
Concrete
Domestic concrete can be disposed at Capella, Emerald, Springsure and Tieri Resource Recovery Centres while both domestic/ commercial concrete can be disposed at Blackwater and Lochlees Resource Recovery Centres.
Green waste
Domestic green waste can be disposed at Emerald, Capella, Bluff, Dingo, Duaringa, Rubyvale, Springsure, Rolleston, and Tieri Resource Recovery Centres while both domestic/ commercial green waste can be disposed at Blackwater and Lochlees Resource Recovery Centres.
Gas cylinders
Household gas cylinders like LPG and fire extinguishers can be dropped to Capella, Sapphire/Rubyvale and the Emerald Resource Recovery Centre.
However, gas cylinders can be refilled many times. You can swap empty gas bottles, BBQ gas bottles, or LPG gas cylinder instantly for a new refurbished gas bottles at Caltex, BP and Mitre 10 outlets through the SWAP’n’GO scheme.

Medical waste
All sharps must be wrapped and then placed into a bio-hazard sharps container.
Filling the sharps container should be stopped once it reaches the fill line. It can then be returned to hospital for correct disposal.
Out-of-date and unwanted medicines can be returned to pharmacies for safe disposal under the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) project.
